5 Insider Tips For Using Removable Wallpaper

April 4 2017

As you can imagine, here at Luxe Walls, we’re experts when it comes to removable wallpaper. But with so many different advice columns and platforms out there, sometimes the volume of information can be overwhelming. Which is why we’ve put together this list of our top insider tips for using removable wallpaper.

5 Insider Tips For Using Removable Wallpaper

Let’s dive in…

1. Clean your walls pre-application

Now here’s a mistake a lot of new decorators tend to make: not cleaning their walls thoroughly before they apply their removable wallpaper. Any surface you’re applying your wall decal to needs to be clean, in order to avoid any interference with the adhesive. Naturally, dirt and grime build up over time across the surface of your walls, and applying your wallpaper directly to this will mean that the adhesive might not stick, or may not last as long as it should.

We always recommend that you clean your walls with warm, soapy water, to ensure that as much of the dirt and grime is removed as possible. Always be sure that your walls are dry and dust-free before applying your wallpaper.

2. Install with a friend

While most removable wallpaper is DIY friendly (particularly Luxe wallpapers), it’s always best to have a friend nearby to help hold the wallpaper in place when you’re installing.

Depending on the area you’re redecorating, the large format of the panels and the peel and stick nature of removable wallpaper means that the task will be much easier (and quicker) to complete with a friend helping out.

As they say, many hands make light work!

3. Over hang your wallpaper

Here’s a great tip that not many people know about when hanging their removable wallpaper: over hang! What do we mean by this? When you’re applying your wallpaper, allow the excess to hang over the skirting boards etc. Be sure to complete the entire wall (making sure that any prints align properly) and let the excess hang.

Once the whole surface is covered, you can get a sharp knife and trim the excess. By completing your installation this way, you can be sure that you’ll never cut the wallpaper too short.

4. Prioritise the line of sight

When we’re installing our removable wallpaper for the first time, many of us get caught up in the idea of ensuring that the panels line up with the skirting board, the ceiling and the architraves. Don’t get us wrong, these aspects of the wall are important, and of course you want to ensure that your wallpaper lines up with them in a straight line, however – that’s not where you should start.

You should always prioritise the centre of the wall, and making sure the wallpaper panels align here. The centre of your wall is the main line of sight for most people, it’s where the eye is immediately drawn to, and so it’s vital that your panels line up here first, before you focus on the top and bottom of the wall.

5. Don’t fret about bubbles

No matter if you’re a professional wallpaper hanger or a novice, everyone gets bubbles in their wallpaper at times. The first thing to know is that it’s nothing to fret about. These things happen, especially if you’re covering a large surface area with a new print.

When it comes to Luxe Walls’ wallpaper, this process is stress-free. You can simply peel the wallpaper back from where you’ve applied it, and reapply, smoothing out the bubbles with a firm hand.

Alternatively, you can also use a clean, sharp pin to pop the bubble and smooth out the air within.
