The Dos and Don’ts for Decorating a New Apartment on a Budget

June 13 2018

Moving into a new apartment is exciting, but can be overwhelming if you’re looking to declutter and start fresh in your interiors. We’ve put together a list of dos and don’ts for decorating a new apartment so you don’t fall down any styling and design traps down the road, and stick to your budget.

The Dos and Don’ts for Decorating a New Apartment on a Budget

DO: Buy Only the Essentials at First – Patience is Key

When you first move in somewhere, there are definitely things you immediately need, like a couch, a mattress and a few dishes and towels. But there really isn’t a rush to get that extra decor and style your apartment all at once – you have lots of time down the track to think of all that! The real art in buying and decorating is patience – if you look around and wait, the chances of you stumbling upon the perfect pieces are higher. Also, you want to avoid overcrowding your apartment and creating the allure of spacious living so you don’t feel like you live in a tiny area.

DON’T: Buy Things That are Super Specific to One Place

We’ve all been guilty at some point or another of seeing that ‘perfect’ item in a store and impulse buying. However, when you’ve just moved into your new place, it may be a good idea to steer clear of buying the very first thing you see, especially if it’s for a specific place. When buying any furniture in the beginning, the key is multipurpose, multifunctional and long-lasting style. If you can manage to find furniture that could potentially last a long time, such as using monochromatic colours and lack of patterns, this will majorly help your budget in the long-run.

DO: Remember Not To Compare Your Place to Anybody Else’s

It can be pretty easy when looking up styles to compare your apartment with another. It is super important to take your time to completely style your place and stick to your unique style and budget.

DON’T: Become Obsessed with Trends

Trends always come and go. Whilst they’re exciting and allow people to experiment with innovative styles and designs, they can also quickly reach their expiry date. There is nothing wrong with taking elements from trends, however avoid going overboard and completely styling your new apartment in one trend. This will not save you money later on. Always go with your gut and your personal design. A simple wallpaper design, such as a monochromatic pattern, will not date and will keep your place looking fresh and elegant.

Hopefully with some of these dos and don’ts, styling and moving into your new apartment on a budget will be less daunting. Have fun with your styling
