About Lara Scorlari

Lara is one of Australia’s most exciting emerging contemporary visual artists.

Influenced by major artistic figures such as Brett Whiteley, Helen Frankenthaler, John Olsen, Hans Hoffman and Mark Rothko. Lara has developed her own style and distinct approach to the ‘abstract expressionist’ style.

Lara’s paintings feature organic forms and fluid shapes. They are inspired by memory, meditation, music and the culture and essence of Australia. Her eye-catching work features a beautiful translucent veiled colour palette that reflects the natural landscape. Her coveted artworks explore multi-layered organic forms, lines, shapes and composition that create an enlivening space for contemplation and a resting place for thoughts.

Luxe Walls have featured a number of artists before, including Cara Jane Diffey, Robin Appasamy and Elise Cattrall (see all of them here!). We are extremely excited to add Lara’s stunning work to our collection.

We’ve asked her a few questions to help us, and you get to know her a little better…

Our questions to Lara

Where did your passion for art originate?

My passion for art originated at a young age. I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. When I was a child I was always surrounded by paint. My parents being very arty always encouraged myself and my younger sister to be creative. We were allowed to use paint generously and to make a mess – after all, it can always be cleaned up!

Throughout school, I continued to be inspired. My favourite teacher at Riverside Girls High School was Mrs Pitchard my art teacher. I went on to study art at Uni for a further 12 years continuing to be inspired by many peers, teachers and arts professionals who shaped my arts practice helping me become the artist I am today.

Tell us a bit about your artistic background?

With many years’ experience working in the Arts and Cultural sector at Dubbo Regional Art Gallery, my studies and just spending much time within the Australian art scene, I know how important it is to create something unique! Something which is just you.

What inspires your art?

I’m very interested in energy and articulating it visually. I am an action/gestural painter and my work is produced in an Abstract Expressionist style that explores developed experimental techniques and processes.

I create depth through exquisite transparent layers that reveal hidden dioramas. The brush becomes an extension of my body – this is also why my works are of a larger scale as I want the viewer to be immersed in my world of colour and energy.

I paint automatically and within a meditative state – this gives flow and calm to my work.

Featuring organic forms and fluid shapes my works are inspired by memory, meditation, music and the culture and essence of Australia. I continue to explore my theme of visually capturing the unseen energy, movement, life force and emotion beneath the surface – while reflecting the palette of our natural landscape.

I am interested in how energy informs the painting and viewing process. My paintings provide a space to engage with this spectrum of energy that then provokes conversation and thought – transporting the viewer to another state of mind.

Where do you see your pieces in people’s homes? I.e. bedroom, lounge etc.

I see my limited edition wallpaper series used as stunning feature walls. Within the home, I can envisage the wallpaper behind a bed, in a dining room, entry and anywhere else to create a sense of calm, interest and provoke thought and conversation. Within the corporate sector I see the series behind reception desks, in boardrooms and once again within spaces that inspire.

The artwork being abstract expressionism, each viewer/individual will engage and see something different within my work – so I genuinely think it would work in any space.  

Did you ever imagine your artwork being printed on wallpaper?

No. And I’m delighted that is is. Because I’m a gestural painter I love the scale of it – as you’re meant to be immersed in it and now we have no limits to size.

What’s next for you? Do you have any big things coming up?

I’m very delighted to be finishing off 2019 with exhibitions in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and for the first time in Singapore.

I’m also starting talks on my next collaboration – with a wine company to make a wine labels – so that is also really exciting.

I am also focusing on my next and only Australian exhibition for 2020 which will be held at the prestigious Maunsell Wickes Gallery in Paddington.
