Spring cleaning: a step-by-step guide

August 28 2019

Spring is almost here. We know all too well how dreaded the annual spring clean can be. Our handy guide to spring cleaning will help you to deep clean the whole house in just one weekend. Helping you get it done and dusted, so you can look forward to relaxing and welcoming spring in style.

On Friday: Make a plan

To help you get your whole spring clean done in one weekend, it’s important to sit down and make a good plan on Friday. Think about what needs doing and what you would like to achieve.

Make a list

Who doesn’t love a good list? Once you’ve figured out a plan, it’s a great idea to make a list of specific tasks. You can tick these off as you go, helping you to see the progress you’re making. Make sure you plan in breaks and anything else you need to get done over the weekend too.

Schedule it

Once you have your list of tasks, assign a time frame for each. This will help you to stay focused and not spend too long on one task. 30 or 45 minute intervals are a great place to start, and don’t forget to go and treat yourself to breaks in between.

Phone a friend

Getting someone in to help you will, of course, make the process quicker. But it can also make spring cleaning fun with the right person. Is there a family member or friend who’d be happy to help you out for a few hours? Maybe you could offer them a cakey treat in return…

Total time: 1 hour

Spring cleaning: a step-by-step guide

On Saturday morning: Time to get organising

Saturday should be focussed on sorting through your belongings and deciding what you do and don’t want to keep.

Start with your wardrobes and closets

If you haven’t worn something for a full year, you’re not likely to wear it again. It’s time to get rid of those old clothes, shoes and accessories. Sort everything into bags, you can donate these later.

Clear the kitchen

Clutter can easily build in the kitchen. Clear out food that’s out of date or the things you’re not likely to use.

Spruce up the bathroom

Just the same as the kitchen, clutter can easily build in the bathroom. All of those nearly empty bottles of shampoo and cosmetics which are probably well past their shelf life start to build up. It’s time to bin those too.

Other rooms

Apply the same principle to the other rooms in your house. If you have a home office, it usually requires particular attention.

Toss everything into the washing machine

Wash all of the fabric in your house which can collect dust and bacteria. Rugs, towels, bedding, throws, even curtains which are machine washable can all be tossed into the washing machine.

Total time: 2 hours

On Saturday afternoon: Start cleaning

Now the decluttering is complete, it’s time to start cleaning room by room. Moving furniture out of the room completely will ensure a thorough job.

Start with vacuuming

Get rid of all that dust BEFORE you wipe or mop anything. Don’t forget the skirting boards and even the walls.

Mop and wipe down

Once the dust is removed, you can wipe down the surfaces and mops the floors.

Total time: 1-2 hours

On Sunday: The even deeper spring cleaning

On Sunday, it’s time to clean all those forgotten spaces.

Wash your windows

Use glass cleaner and no real effort should be involved. Don’t forget to also wipe those window tracks.

Deep clean the oven

When was the last time that oven had a deep clean inside and out? Remove everything and use a degreaser to help you.

Clean the refrigerator and freezer

Empty the contents and store in a cooler. Turn off the fridge and let the shelves come to room temperature before you them. Glass and ceramic parts could crack if they come into contact with hot water, so this is an important step.

Total time: three to four hours

Extra tips

  • Throw down some carpet cleaner 15 minutes before you vacuum to help freshen up the smell of the whole house.
  • Enjoy well-deserved breaks between tasks.
  • Add a few defusers around the house to finish it all off.

Happy spring cleaning.
