How to Style Bookshelves Layer By Layer

February 7 2018

There’s no doubt that stylish shelving has taken over the interior design trends. From books, to candles to greenery, there really is limitless potential when it comes to styling your shelves and display sets. Here at Luxe Walls however, we understand that sometimes all that possibility can be a little daunting when actually looking at a blank space in front of you. We thought we would put together some styling tips and ideas to help your shelves go from a blank wooden storage area to the statement decor of your space.

Start With Larger Items

When it comes to starting off, larger decor items are definitely your best bet. Larger items take up more space and become the foundation of the style you’re wanting to achieve.

Starting off with those bulkier items will also help make it easier for you to get the balance and scale of your decorations just right. What most people don’t realise, is that it can be super easy to get lost when starting off with lots of smaller items, potentially overwhelming the space to look cluttered and messy. Great large items to use on your shelves could include wooden baskets, books, or plants to begin with that basic layout.

Bring In Artwork

No matter what kind of shelf you own, or what kind of style you are wanting to achieve, including artwork in your design is always a big yes. Artwork always adds an element of interest to your shelving, and can range in any size depending on how much space you have to work with.

A great rule to follow if you’re feeling a little lost is to keep artworks – especially larger artworks – to the back of the shelf, whilst the smaller things make their way to the front. A larger artwork at the back can help to create an overall tone towards your shelving whilst also setting the mood – it really is the perfect way to make your shelves pop!

Mix Up Book Placement

Books are one of the easiest and simplest things to use when it comes to styling shelves and display sets. You can place them in almost any way and they will always seem to work! These items are also a great way to add personality to your space, showing off your interests whether it be cooking, academics, or even just some books you like to read.

If you have a large amount of shelving, mixing up the book placement is an easy way to add interest and avoid having to spend extra money on decor. Whether you are feeling horizontal, vertical, diagonal or a mix of all three, displaying books really is too easy.

Decorating in Odd Numbers

A great rule of thumb to follow when decorating your shelving is definitely to decorate in odd numbers. By using this little trick, odd-numbered decor establishes a sense of balance and scale to your ornaments. The most common numbered arrangements usually revolve around 1, 3, 5 or 7 piece sets.

Discover Your Green Thumb

When it comes to decor, you can never go wrong with some greenery and plant life. No matter what style you have and what colour palette or theme you are going for, adding some greenery breathes life into any space.

Adding some plant life gives a relaxing touch to your decor, with the green hues infusing an earthy tone. As well as looking aesthetically sophisticated, plants also produce some extra oxygen and clear the air of toxins in your space – you really can’t go wrong!
