Artist Spotlight: Charlotte Brandis, the Australian Bush at Close Range

Artist Spotlight: Charlotte Brandis, the Australian Bush at Close Range — Luxe Walls journal

Charlotte Brandis's wallpaper patterns begin with the ordinary things underfoot: a gum leaf, a fallen banksia, a scatter of blossom, collected on walks close to home.

Charlotte is a Sydney-based illustrator and designer whose work celebrates Australian flora and fauna. She grew up in the 1980s on the edge of Lane Cove National Park, where afternoons spent in the bush among turtles, lizards, kookaburras and cockatoos shaped a lasting affection for the local landscape. You can see that childhood in every design she makes.

Her collection is available through her artist page.

From the Bush to the Drawing Table

Charlotte's process moves between the collected and the drawn. Designs begin with photographs and gathered leaves, feathers and seed pods, then travel through lightbox tracing, sketching, collage and painting, sometimes on paper, sometimes on screen.

The result is the Australian bush at close range: familiar, nostalgic and quietly bold. Her graphic, contemporary hand keeps the subject matter fresh rather than twee, which is what makes the patterns so easy to live with.

In 2018 she founded her studio and label, Love From, designing Australian-themed giftware made with ethically sourced materials, recycled paper and eco-friendly inks. The same care for materials and place carries through to her wallpaper designs.

    The Designs

The collection is small and tightly edited, three patterns that each carry a distinct mood.

Misty Gum Leaf layers eucalyptus foliage in a soft, atmospheric repeat. The Mist colourway is gentle enough for whole rooms, and it has become a favourite for bedrooms and calm living spaces.

Wild Confetti is the playful one: a scatter of native blossoms and leaves in Sage that reads like celebration rather than clutter. It is a natural fit for nurseries, kids' rooms and entryways that need a lift.

Banksia in Blush takes the most sculptural of Australian flowers and softens it into a warm, contemporary floral. It pairs beautifully with warm timber, linen and rattan.

All three sit within our wider Australiana collection and botanical collection if you would like to compare them with kindred designs.

    Where It Works

Charlotte's patterns are versatile because they balance detail with breathing room. Misty Gum Leaf suits restful spaces, Wild Confetti brings energy to family rooms and playrooms, and Banksia Blush works as a feature wall in dining rooms and bedrooms.

As with all our artist designs, the wallpaper is removable peel and stick, printed to order at $99/m². Order a $10 sample to check the colourway against your furniture and light, and use the calculator for an instant price from your wall measurements.

    Original Art, Properly Supported

Every Charlotte Brandis design is used under licence and printed on demand, with a share of each purchase going directly to Charlotte. It is original Australian illustration, supporting the artist who drew it.
