How Much Does Wallpaper Cost in Australia?
Ask five suppliers what a feature wall costs and you will get five answers, in three different units, none of which you can compare. Some quote per roll. Some quote per drop. Some quote a "from" price that only applies to one plain colourway. It is one of the least transparent categories in Australian interiors, and it is the main reason people put the project off.
So here are the real numbers, current as at September 2026, including the parts most price guides leave out.
Why the category is so hard to price compare
Wallpaper is sold three ways in Australia, and each one hides its cost somewhere different.
Rolls. A traditional roll is sold whole. You cannot buy 2.4 rolls, you buy three, and the third one lives in a cupboard. Every drop also needs about 30cm of trimming allowance, roughly 15cm top and bottom, so a 2.7m ceiling consumes 3m of roll per strip.
Pattern repeat. If the design repeats, each new strip has to be cut so the pattern lines up with the one beside it. The offcut is waste. Australian trade guidance is to add about 10 per cent for repeats up to 26cm, and 15 to 20 per cent for repeats over 26cm. Half drop matches waste more than straight matches.
Made to measure panels. Panels are printed to your wall size, so there is no repeat wastage and no rounding up to whole rolls. You pay for area, with a disclosed allowance for trimming.
Stack the first two together and a wall that needs 8.1 square metres of coverage can easily consume 11 to 12 square metres of purchased roll. If you are comparing a roll price against a per square metre price, you are not comparing like with like.
What each format actually costs
To be fair to every option, here is what the formats cost per square metre in Australia right now.
- Made to measure peel and stick: roughly $50 to $99 per square metre depending on the brand and whether the design is licensed from an artist. Our own range is $79 per square metre, and our artist collections are $99 per square metre, which reflects the royalty paid to the artist.
- Traditional rolls: commonly $290 to $310 per roll for good quality imported paper. A 61.5cm by 10m roll covers about 6 square metres before wastage, which works out at roughly $48 to $52 per square metre of roll, and more once repeats and rounding are counted.
- Imported mural panels: from about £30 to £39 per square metre before freight, which is competitive on paper until international shipping and a three to six week wait are added.
None of these is the wrong choice. Traditional rolls in a straight match design, hung well, are excellent value. The point is simply that the units are different, so the sticker price rarely tells you the invoice.
Professional installation, the line most guides omit
If you are hanging paste the wall paper, most people bring in a professional. Installers commonly charge $100 to $200 per hour, and a standard feature wall takes three to six hours, plus wall preparation. Stripping old paper, patching, sanding and priming can add a session on its own, and stairwells, raked ceilings and heavily cut up walls take longer per square metre than a flat bedroom wall.
Peel and stick changes this equation, because it is the format most people can hang themselves. A single feature wall is a comfortable two person afternoon. If you would rather not, read our installation guide or work with one of our installation partners.
The extras that catch people out
Minimum order quantities. Most made to measure suppliers have one. Ours is 3 square metres, which is smaller than a single standard drop, so it rarely bites.
Samples. Colour on a backlit screen is not colour on a south facing wall in Melbourne in July. Our C5 samples are $10, postage included, and the $10 is credited back when you order.
Freight. A lot of wallpaper sold here is printed overseas. Add international shipping and a wait of several weeks. Printing in Australia removes both.
Paying twice. More money is lost to mis measured walls than to any premium finish. Our how to measure guide takes five minutes and saves the most expensive mistake in the category.
A worked example: a 3m by 3.5m feature wall
Take a wall 3 metres wide by 3.5 metres high.
- Area: 3 x 3.5 = 10.5 square metres.
- Allowance: we add 10 per cent automatically so there is room to trim, which gives 11.55 square metres.
- Charging increment: the final area is charged to the next 0.1 square metre, so you are charged for 11.6 square metres.
- Price: 11.6 x $79 = $916.40 in our core range. In an artist collection, 11.6 x $99 = $1,148.40.
That is the full price. No rolls left over, no repeat wastage, no freight surprise, and the panels arrive cut to that wall. For comparison, the same wall in $300 rolls would need two rolls at minimum once trimming and repeat are counted, so around $600 in materials with a part roll left over, plus $300 to $1,200 if you have it hung professionally.
So what should you budget?
For one standard feature wall in an Australian home:
- DIY peel and stick, made to measure: roughly $700 to $900 in materials, nothing else required beyond a smoothing tool and a sharp blade.
- DIY traditional rolls: roughly $300 to $900 in materials depending on the paper and how much the repeat wastes.
- Professionally installed traditional paper: commonly $900 to $2,000 all in, depending on your city and the state of the wall.
Wallpaper in Australia is not expensive. Buying it badly is. Once you strip out roll wastage, international freight and rework, a known rate per square metre is usually the most predictable path to the wall you actually wanted.
Price your own wall on the calculator, order a $10 sample to confirm the colour in your light, and browse the full range when you know what you are working with.
