Japandi Wallpaper Ideas for Australian Homes

Japandi Wallpaper Ideas for Australian Homes — Luxe Walls journal

Japandi is the calm one. It takes the warmth of Scandinavian homes and the restraint of Japanese interiors, then strips out anything that doesn't earn its place. That makes wallpaper a slightly surprising fit, because plenty of people assume a japandi room means bare walls.

It doesn't. The best japandi rooms have texture on the walls, and wallpaper is the easiest way to get it without hiring a plasterer or living with a week of dust. Here's how to choose japandi wallpaper that looks considered rather than beige by default, and how to make it work in an Australian home.

    What makes a wallpaper "japandi"

Neutral isn't enough on its own. Plenty of neutral wallpapers are flat, cool and a bit corporate. Japandi wallpaper has a few things in common:

    • Texture you can read from across the room. Woven linen, fine strie lines, brushed plaster, paper-like crinkle. The surface does the work that pattern does in other styles.
    • Warm, earthy colour. Oat, sand, stone, mushroom, clay, soft sage and the occasional deep charcoal. Cool greys and stark whites drift towards plain Scandi.
    • Low contrast. Even when there's a pattern, it sits close to the base colour so the wall reads as one calm plane.
    • Natural references. Weave, grain, stone, mountains, branches. Nothing that looks synthetic or glossy.

If a design ticks most of those boxes, it will sit happily in a japandi scheme. Browse the full japandi wallpaper collection with that checklist in mind and you'll notice the difference between a calm texture and a design that just happens to be pale.

The four japandi wallpaper looks that work

    Linen and woven textures

This is the safest starting point and the one most people end up loving. A linen-look wallpaper gives a wall the soft, slightly irregular surface of fabric, which warms up timber floors and white oak joinery straight away.

Linen Stone is a good example: warm beige and light taupe with a woven texture that reads as stone-washed linen. In a bedroom it does what a good headboard does, adding softness without adding clutter. Woven herringbone and mauve linen designs sit in the same family if you want a touch more pattern or colour.

    Strie and brushed finishes

Strie is a fine vertical streak, a bit like dragged paint. It's subtle up close and gives a wall gentle movement from a distance. Vertical lines also make a ceiling feel higher, which helps in older homes with low ceilings and in apartments.

Sage Strie brings in the soft green that keeps japandi from going too beige. Pair it with pale timber, linen bedding and a single dark accent (a black lamp base, a charcoal throw) and you have the whole look.

    Panelling and architectural lines

Real timber battens are lovely and expensive to install properly. A printed panel effect gets you the rhythm of slatted timber on a flat wall. Linear Panels uses clean, repeating lines inspired by modern wood panelling, which suits entries, hallways and the wall behind a TV unit where you want structure without fuss.

The trick with panel designs is to keep the rest of the room quiet. One panelled wall plus plain painted walls looks architectural. Panels everywhere starts to feel like a sauna.

    Murals and brushwork

Japandi isn't all texture. A single mural with gestural ink-style brushstrokes or a soft landscape can be the one piece of art in a room. It works best on a wall you see from a distance, like the end of a living room or behind a bed.

Mountain View by Western Australian artist De-Anne Strange is a strong example: bold black brushstrokes on an off-white ground, graphic and calm at the same time. It's part of our artist collections, so it sits at $99/m² rather than the $79/m² starting price of the core range.

    Where japandi wallpaper works best

Bedrooms. The easiest win. A textured feature wall behind the bed adds warmth and makes the room feel finished without extra furniture. Linen and strie designs are ideal here. Find more ideas on our bedroom wallpaper page.

Living rooms. Go for one wall, usually the one your eye lands on when you walk in. Panel effects or a mural work well behind a low sofa or media unit.

Home offices. A calm, low-contrast texture makes a better video call background than a busy bookshelf, and it's easier on the eyes over a long day.

Entries and hallways. These are often narrow and dark. A warm, light texture bounces light around and gives a small space some character.

Powder rooms and laundries. Our wallpaper suits well-ventilated bathrooms, powder rooms and laundries, but not direct splash zones. A soft sage or stone texture in a powder room is a quiet surprise for guests.

How to build a japandi colour palette around your wallpaper

Start with the wallpaper and pull the rest of the room from it. It's far easier to match paint and linen to a printed wall than the other way around.

    1. Pick one base tone. Warm beige, stone or sage. This is your wallpaper.
    2. Add timber. Light oak, ash or a mid-tone walnut. Keep it matte.
    3. Bring in one dark. Charcoal, black or deep brown, used sparingly on lamp bases, picture frames or a single chair.
    4. Use natural fabrics. Linen, wool, cotton and jute in tones close to the wall.
    5. Leave space. Japandi relies on what isn't there. Fewer objects, chosen well.

For trim and ceilings, a warm white usually works better than a bright one. Stark white next to a warm linen texture can make the wallpaper look dirty.

Feature wall or the whole room?

Most japandi rooms only need one papered wall. Texture is the point, and one wall of it is enough to change how a room feels. Papering all four walls in a strong linen weave can feel heavy, especially in smaller rooms with less natural light.

There are exceptions. A small powder room or study wrapped in a soft, low-contrast texture feels cocooning in a good way. If you're unsure, start with one wall. You can always add more later.

Scale and the pattern scale slider

Japandi patterns are usually subtle, so scale matters more than people expect. A linen weave printed too large starts to look like a close-up photo. Printed too small, it can read as flat colour from across the room.

Every Luxe Walls design is printed to order, and you choose the pattern scale with a slider when you order. For texture designs, keep the scale close to the default so the weave reads as real fabric. For murals, think about where the focal point lands on your wall, such as the peak of a mountain sitting above the bedhead rather than behind it.

Peel and stick suits the japandi approach

Our wallpaper is self-adhesive and designed to be installed yourself. There's no paste and no soaking, and you can reposition a panel while you line it up. That suits japandi's slow, considered approach: put one wall up, live with it, and decide if you want more.

    A few practical points:

    • Prep matters more with subtle textures. Fill holes and sand rough patches, because a low-contrast design shows every bump underneath.
    • Measure each wall and add a little extra for trimming. The minimum order is 3m².
    • Work from the centre of your focal wall outwards so any pattern sits evenly.

    Pricing and samples

Core designs start from $79/m², and our artist collections (including De-Anne Strange's work) are $99/m². Shipping is free on orders over $250, with a flat $49 under that, and Afterpay is available. Every design carries a 2-year warranty on fade and adhesion.

Texture is hard to judge on a screen, and japandi lives or dies on texture. Order a $10 sample, stick a sample up on the actual wall and look at it in morning and evening light. The sample is printed on the real peel and stick wallpaper, and the $10 is credited against an order placed within 30 days.

Designers, stylists and builders specifying japandi schemes across multiple rooms or projects can apply for trade pricing through our trade program.
