Artist Spotlight: Lara Scolari, the Australian Landscape at Architectural Scale

Lara is a contemporary Australian painter working from her studio in Balmain, Sydney. She is known for large, gestural abstract paintings that explore the energy, movement and unseen rhythms of the Australian landscape. Her collection is available through her artist page.

Layer by Layer

Each painting is built from many translucent layers of ink, acrylic, pastel, oil stick and metallic leaf, with a lot of expressive mark-making in between. The result is atmospheric and full of movement, which is exactly why her work translates so naturally to a whole wall.

In Lara's words: "The intention is not simply to decorate a wall, but to use art at architectural scale to bring movement, positive energy, connection and a sense of flow into the spaces where people live, meet, work and gather."

The Murals

Ocean Dance is the hero of the collection, a sweep of blues, teals and greens with the movement of water running through it. It is the piece to start with if you want a wall that feels alive.

Abyss and Jelly Blue stay in the deep blues and navies, lifted with touches of gold, white and orange. Both suit living rooms and bedrooms where you want depth without darkness.

Earth Echo I is the quietest of the set, in soft greys, browns and a hint of pink. If you love Lara's energy but want a calmer wall, this is the one.

Shifting Stones, Boulder Azure and Bedrock I pair rust and ochre with blue and teal, the colours of rock against water and sky.

Kakadu and The Lost City are the warmest works in the collection, all reds, rusts, ochres and purples. They bring real presence to a dining room or entry.
